On Friday, November 6 and Saturday, November 7, Sherri Slater will perform her one-woman play “Dorothy Parker – A Night at The Algonquin” to benefit Every Woman’s Place. The event will be hosted by The Greater Muskegon Service League at the Beardsley Theatre. The event will begin at 6:30 with a cocktail hour, Speakeasy style. The performance begins at 7:30 and will conclude at 8:30 each night. Dorothy Parker (1893-1967), author, critic and poet was a legendary literary figure known for her biting wit. She was also a chronicler and a harsh critic of 1920s-1930s social roles. Of particular importance was Parker’s use of stereotypical female characters to satirize, more bitterly than playfully, the limited roles available to American women during the Twenties and Thirties. Dorothy Parker was not meant to be Betty Crocker, the joys of womanhood were not on her agenda. The complications, delights, humor, and frustrations of womanhood were, however unflinchingly examined by Parker. The gap between how life is dressed up to appear and what it looks like underneath its fancy trimming is the gap where interesting writing begins, especially when that writing is satiric. She was irreverent toward anything held sacred, which is why Dorothy Parker has survived the test of time. So many of the issues close to her heart then, are still as relevant today. She worked at Vogue and Vanity Fair, and was a member of the original staff at The New Yorker. The magazine also published a number of her short stories. In addition to her writing, Dorothy Parker was a noted member of the New York literary scene in the 1920s and a charter member of the Round Table. During the 1930s and 1940s she wrote screenplays with her second husband Alan Campbell, including the 1937 adaptation of A Star Is Born and the 1942 Alfred Hitchcock film Saboteur.
